Literature Text

There were dragonflies in the window,
a cracked cup in the kitchen sink.
She sat staring at cold grey ashes,
where burning embers used to be.
All the mirrors had been blackened
because she didn’t want to see.
The emptiness inside herself
where laughter used to breed.

(chorus)
Cold rains fall in the morning.
Cold winds blow through the night.
Winter wraps its fingers around her heart.
And squeezes out any life.

She can’t dream of tomorrow.
Because today never turns out right.
Say goodbye to any whispers of the crickets chirp
And say hello to the chocolate blight.
(end chorus)

The shadows danced upon the walls
she had erected in her own defense.
The cold exterior had crumbled and cracked
but she still had that iron fence.
Chained up tight with a lock in place
so sure that no one would find the key.
Or rummage through the overgrown weeds and shrubs
to where her flowers used to beckon the bees.

(refrain)
Tears on her pillow, she drowns in the night.
Books in the parlor, won’t make everything right.
She danced her last dance when the band left the room.
All would be normal in June. It had to be normal in June.
(end refrain)

The phone keeps ringing off the hook
but she pretends not to hear a sound.
Afraid that the voice on the other end
might have the strength to bring her ’round.
But a dragonfly has died on the windowsill
And she weeps for its loss of life.
Knowing hope just died right before her eyes
and her own hand twisted the knife.

(chorus)
Cold rains fall in the morning.
Cold winds blow through the night.
Winter wraps its fingers around her heart
And squeezes out any life.

She can’t dream of tomorrow.
Because today never turns out right.
Say goodbye to any whispers of the crickets chirp
And say hello to the chocolate blight.
(end chorus)
