Literature Text

The stars that glare down from the evening sky.
They shame me for my past.
It’s in solitude that I suffer.
My innocence was made of glass.

But those crystal walls, they were shattered.
Once my footsteps stained the dirt.
I had pledged my soul to protect the weak,
But death was something that we couldn’t avert.

They called me a soldier of fortune.
You named me sinner and fool.
Shaped from the flames in a field of rice.
I was branded a political tool.

I’m scarred with the stripes of my valor.
All my friend’s names are carved in stone.
Trapped in the memories of the brothers I lost,
I’m damned to wander through this pain alone

I was watching something about the men who walked into the forest decades ago and never came back out.  A blues tune started up in my head that this is originally part of.  I decided that the song was a bit too....much.  So I cut it back and turned it into this poem instead.
